“Silicone free”, “parabens free”, “certified organic”… If you’re at all into your skincare, chances are, you’ve heard these beauty buzzwords aaaaall before.
While it’s tempting to write them off as pure marketing part of the “all natural brigade”, it’s not just our skin that likes our cosmetics sans nasties, with chemicals such as parabens finding their way down our sink drains into the ocean, only to accumulate in the tissues of marine wildlife and even kill off coral. Yikes.
And it doesn’t stop at the ingredients, with the global beauty industry responsible for an estimated production of 120 billion units of packaging ever year (think cellophane perfume pacakging, plastic tubs of cream, drained serum bottles and more) resulting in the loss of around 18 million acres of forest each year.
Without change from us, by 2050 there is expected to be 12 billion tonnes of plastic in landfills – roughly the equivalent of 35,000 Empire State Buildings. Let that sink in.
But it doesn’t have to be this way, after all, every little bit helps! And if you’ve been toying with the idea of a zero waste beauty routine, now is the time to do it. Here to help you out, we’ve figured out six simple swaps to create a change that’s better for you and the planet:
6 simple swaps to make for a zero waste beauty routine
Ever heard of making your own toothpaste? Believe it or not making your own toothpaste is not only good for your mouth, bank account and the environment. Brands such as Kohle make their toothpastes with all of the above and use recyclable packaging, so you never need to worry about the environment. Win-win!

We know it’s the go-to after a night out out on the town, but the sad truth is that most face wipes are not biodegradable and will end up in landfill. Using an all natural makeup remover such as a certified organic rosehip oil on a washable bamboo towelettes or flannels is a great way to avoid this.
Not only does rosehip oil remove the remnants of your ‘about last night’ smokey eye with ease, it also leaves your face moisturised and hydrated from the oil.

Tampons and pads not only are a leading cause of blocked trains but harmful to the both the land and water with the amount of landfill and pollution it causes. Switching to long lasting period cups significantly cuts back on waste.
The Lunette cup will last you up to 10 years, is easier than you think to use and will save you lots of money on menstrual hygiene products. Bonus? Their packaging is completely compostable and they make all their products at a wind-powered factory in Finland so Mother Nature can breathe a little easier!

While it may sound odd, making your own home-made deodorant not only will save you a ton of money, but it’s also full of all eco-friendly products to make your body will sing with happiness.
The best part is you can mix up the scent every time, and of course no more half empty cans lying around the home. Coconut oil, corn starch, baking soda, essential oils and shea butter. Time poor? Look for natural deodorants built around these ingredients.

Many women spend hundreds and even thousands on skin are products each year and believe it or not, you can achieve the same benefits from this zero waste beauty routine.
Like we said before, coconut oil is god’s gift from nature and forms the perfect ‘carrier oil’ to create a whole host of beauty products, including face moisturisers. Go for natural and nourishing by making your own face cream with coconut oil and Vitamin E oil.
Just remember: pure Vitamin E oil is potent, so you only need to add a few drops to your jar’s worth of coconut oil to make it. Simply combine, beat together, refridgerate, remove once hard and then beat again until it forms a cream.

Understand the background of the products of the brands you buy from. Research products that are ethically produced, cruelty-free and of course, environmentally friendly. There are a lot of ‘marketplace’ style brands, like A Good Scout, out there now that house a collection of sustainable products.
These marketplaces make it their mission to be greener and kinder to the world. The understand how important it is to connect conscious consumers with ethical brands and make it easy for them to purchase.
In terms of specifically knowing what’s in a product, make sure your buying products with natural ingredients (toxins, yuck!) also look for transparency in how the products are made.
