Why The Soccer Style Trend Is Everything Right Now

Fashion and sport. The two have a lot more to do with each other than one might think. After all, fashion is much more about the world around it than anything else. As the illustrious Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

This brings us back to fashion and sport. With the 2018 FIFA World Cup merely days away, soccer (or football, I should say) fever has well and truly hit the fashion world, spawning a slew of trends centred around the internationally beloved ball game.

While it may seem like a new trend, this one has been bubbling away under the surface for a few years now. As many strange trends do, this one started with Vetements‘ creative director Demna Gvasalia, who put soccer scarves his Fall / Winter 2016 runway. Laced with irony, the scarves were emblazoned with the words “Football Scarf” in Russian, a look that then took the streets of Moscow in 2016 and is now coming full circle ahead of the world cup in Russia in two days time.

With the runways and streets of recent fashion weeks abundant with non-soccer soccer scarves, stylised jerseys and the rise of ‘formation’ jewellery, this is one trend where you don’t actually need to know your Ronaldo from your Ronaldinho (or even know if that’s a current reference!) to get in on the look.

Jerseys are an instant go-to when it comes making football style work. Simple yet bold, the logo will almost always do all the talking while the relaxed, unisex fit keeps it comfy and casual. Dress it up or dress it down with designer pieces for instant impact.

If a jersey is a little too much for you, non-soccer soccer scarves are the perfect way to add a little football fever to your off-duty repetoire. Fashion search paltform Lyst.com says global searches for the terms “football scarf” and “soccer scarf” increased by 13 percent in March, with womenswear-specific searches for the sporty accessory rising 57 percent.

Ok, ladies now let’s get in formation (sorry, had to!). If jerseys and logomania aren’t your thing, then this refined take on FIFA fashion by jewellery designer Saskia Diez will be right up your alley. A collection of 11 styles of earring, each one represents a soccer team’s formation, with each player symbolised by a freshwater pearl.

While jewellery and jerseys may be on opposite ends of the spectrum, a soccer-inspired shoe falls neatly down the middle. The re-released Adidas Originals’ Samba Rose, an 80s soccer icon, is the perfect example of timeless football chic. Recently dropping women’s-exclusive take on the shoe, its soft leather upper and signature 3-Stripes appeal will never go out of style.
